Frequent Questions

  • How fit do I need to be to join TVS?

TVS is open to anyone interested in cycling on a regular basis. As with any sport and any club the more you get involved and the more you get out riding the more you will benefit. The easiest first step is to join one of the TVS club rides on a Sunday. These leave Pirbright at 9:00 and follow a variety of routes. Typically the rides are between 50 and 60 miles (usually with a tea break midway) and are ridden at between 16 and 19 mph depending on conditions and the terrain. TVS is primarily a road cycling club but many of us also enjoy mountain biking and get involved with local events.

  • What type of bike do I need?

That’s up to you and your budget. Good road bikes start at around £750 new, less if you can get a good deal on eBay or similar, and prices go as high as you can imagine with top bikes running into several thousand pounds. The important points are to ensure the bike is safe and is a good fit. If in doubt, go to one of the many good local bike shops. Always test ride a bike before buying. Although there are some great deals on cycling websites don’t be tempted to buy without ensuring it is a good fit. In the winter and in wet weather we expect you to have a rear light and mudguards on your bike.

  • What kit do I need to wear?

Helmet, shoes, gloves, padded shorts/tights and appropriate clothing for the conditions are important. As with the bike what you spend is a matter of personal choice and budget. TVS has very good quality club kit and although not ‘required’ wearing on club runs we do encourage members to wear club kit at any events they enter.

  • What if I have any problems with my bike or need help setting it up?

Your first port of call should be the cycle shop where you bought your bike. Good bike shops will ensure you are set up correctly and provide a comprehensive after sales service. If in doubt about the advice you are given or if your requirements change ask one of the TVS members as some bike shops are better set up for certain types of riding.

  • Are all TVS members expected to compete in races and time trials?

The club has a good mix of very talented riders and less experienced riders. Some race successfully on a regular basis at a high level, some are keen time triallists, some prefer sportive rides and others simply enjoy the club rides. There is always support for those who want to try something new and the more experienced members are a great source of advice and encouragement. For many of the club members having some fixed targets in the calendar provides a good source of motivation. Ultimately unless you have a go at different types of cycling you won’t know what you enjoy most.

  • Can TVS help with training plans and achieving specific cycling goals?

The club is a great place for help and advice – and if we don’t know the answer ourselves we can point you in the right direction. Currently TVS doesn’t provide personalised coaching or training plans but we can help you locate qualified cycling coaches who can work with you to develop plans to achieve your goals.
